Anna and Francesco Tampieri on Critical Collecting

Critical Collecting is a publication printed by Art Verona 2016 in which ten italian collectors are narrated by ten italian independent critics and curators. Critical Collecting has been curated by Antonio Grulli. I wrote a text about Anna and Francesco Tampieri.

Critical Collecting introduced by Antonio Grulli:

Ten young independent art critics have been invited to write a critical text which analyses collecting or the way of collecting used by other collectors, always paying particular attention to the Italian market which characterises ArtVerona. In addition to the aspect linked to patronage, which emerges immediately, the projects wants to monitor the international evolution of the people that buy art today, revealing the need to convey meaning to their collection, also by involving an attentive outside eye, capable of narrating a body of works or single elements identified as meaningful.

This will be a way of bringing the figure of the art critic, essential to the correct and healthy pursuit of the art world, and all too often set to one side in these years of prevailing curatorial practices, back to the centre of things. With this project, ArtVerona wants to attempt to unhinge the classic, predictable matching of collectors and artists which is created in fairs, asking the collectors to produce, buy, signal and present the work of the artists. Critical Collecting allows me to continue a line of research begun in 2009 on the criticism of art and writing, in Italy and abroad. Critical Collecting is a project which tries to redefine the sphere of action of art collecting which is linked to frequently to the mere moment of purchasing works considered in the classic sense, implicitly and experimentally suggesting the possibility of funding new market niches. In years in which artists have pushed back the boundaries of the concept of a work of art to include every form of object or concept, not necessarily limited to the material aspects, why can’t we think of collectors who also include critical texts in (and on) their collection?
